David de Gea sends warning to Manchester United teammates ahead of Tottenham clash

David de Gea wants his teammates to work on scoring more goals ahead of facing Tottenham on Wednesday.

Manchester United's winning run came to an end on Sunday as they were held to a goalless stalemate by Newcastle United. Erik ten Hag's side didn't play particularly well but still had plenty of chances to score, with Fred and Marcus Rashford the biggest culprits in wasting great opportunities.

The game follows Thursday's narrow win over Omonia Nicosia in which United failed to find a way past the Cypriot minnows until the 93rd minute. Scoring goals seems to be a creeping problem and De Gea wants the players to work hard on resolving the issue before a tough game against Spurs.

"Massive, massive week," he told MUTV. "We have two big games, let's start with recovery tomorrow. Everyone will have to recover well.

"Go again on Wednesday, big game, Tottenham of course is a great team but we play at home. We have to do our best and try to score goals."

De Gea was at least pleased that he kept a clean sheet on his 500th appearance for the club. He was presented with an award by legendary manager Sir Alex Ferguson prior to kick-off to mark the milestone which left the Spaniard delighted.

"I'm so, so happy, proud to reach 500 games," he explained. "Especially with a clean sheet. It could have been better if we score one goal but the feeling is great.

"It was the right person to give me the award, he brought me to the club, he trust me so it was great to be there at Old Trafford with Sir Alex and it was a great moment."
