David De Gea ‘sad’ and ‘disappointed’ after Manchester United knocked out of Champions League

David De Gea spelled out his emotions after Manchester United’s exit from the Champions League against Atletico Madrid.

A place in the quarter-finals was beyond the Red Devils after Renan Lodi struck on Tuesday night, with only a few chances created by the hosts in reply.

It means United will spend a fifth season in a row without a trophy, with their place in next season’s competition also under threat amid their fight for fourth place in the Premier League.

“Really disappointing, it’s difficult to describe in words how we feel but we didn’t do enough in both games to win,” De Gea told BT Sport.

“Not at our best, it’s a disappointing day for us. They are a team with a lot of experience, they know how to play these tight games.

“It was very difficult for us to create chances, we don’t create many chances so this is football. We are out of one of the most important competitions so we are very sad.

“As soon as they scored, they put the whole team in front of [Jan] Oblak. They are a very defensive team and it’s very difficult to score against them.”
