David de Gea makes admission about Marcus Rashford miss for Manchester United vs Newcastle

David de Gea was certain that Marcus Rashford would score his missed last-gasp chance against Newcastle United.

Manchester United were held to a goalless draw by the Magpies on Sunday and even though they were far from their best, Erik ten Hag's side created enough big chances to win the game. Cristiano Ronaldo twice had the ball in the back of the net but saw his goals disallowed, Jadon Sancho should have won a penalty and Fred shanked the ball wide when presented with an open goal by Rashford.

It was Rashford himself who should have won the game with practically the last touch as Casemiro delivered a brilliant cross into the box but the striker could only nod wide from close range. De Gea couldn't believe it didn't go in.

"Yeah, we thought, as soon as I saw the ball and I saw Marcus free in the box 'that's a goal'," he told MUTV. "He normally scores a good goal for us, but what's important is not just the ones in the XI, the ones from the bench, they have to make an impact and I think we're doing really well as a team."

Despite the dropped points, which have seen United fall three points behind fourth-placed Chelsea, De Gea was pleased with the defence for keeping a free-scoring Newcastle at bay.

"It's massive," he said on how good the clean sheet is for the defence. "Newcastle have been playing really good football, scoring goals so to keep a clean sheet is big for us.

"If you can not win the game then keep a clean sheet and at least we have one point. But I think if we want to finish in the top places in the table we have to win those games."
