David de Gea gives verdict on Manchester United's chances of beating Barcelona

David de Gea believes Manchester United are in a 'great' position to get past Barcelona in the Europa League.

The two football giants played out a captivating 2-2 draw in the first leg of their play-off tie on Thursday at the Camp Nou with both sides having great chances to win. Marcos Alonso gave the hosts the lead but Marcus Rashford's red-hot streak continued as he equalised a few minutes later.

United then took the lead after great work from Rashford saw Jules Kounde turn into his own net but Barcelona fought back well and drew level when Raphina's cross evaded everyone and snuck into the far corner. Erik ten Hag's side will now have the second leg at Old Trafford and De Gea thinks that will be a huge advantage.

“It is always great to play the second leg at home, with our fans and we are in a great way,” the goalkeeper told United's in-house media. “It is perfect for us to go there and play our game and win the game.

“I think every game we try to win but they are a great team for sure and they are doing really well.

“A draw for sure is a good result and we go to Old Trafford with our fans and try to put pressure on them. [We will] try to play good football and win the game.”

De Gea was also in agreement with everyone else in thinking the match was a fantastic one. He added: “It is never a great result when you draw but it was a great match.

“I think both teams tried to score goals and create chances, it was a great game. Maybe after we scored the second goal we were controlling the game, then they scored to make it 2-2.

“It was a bit difficult at the end as they created some chances, but let's see. The game is open, so let's see at Old Trafford on Thursday if we can play [more] great football and try and win again.”
