David de Gea criticises Manchester United's performance despite Norwich win

David de Gea has insisted that Manchester United still need to improve as he doesn't believe their performance against Norwich City, despite being victorious, was good enough.

United defeated relegation strugglers Norwich 3-2 at Old Trafford but made life much harder than it needed to be for themselves. Ralf Rangnick's side raced into a two-goal lead through Cristiano Ronaldo and were attacking with a confidence rarely seen this season.

Yet, just before the break their defensive frailties once again became apparent as the Canaries cut through the backline to tee Kieran Dowell up to half the deficit. In the second half, it was Dowell who turned provider and split the defence with a pass to Timu Pukki who levelled the scores.

United were on the ropes as the Premier League's bottom club looked the more likely to score, with De Gea being called upon several times, but Ronaldo stepped up once again to clinch them the three points with a free-kick to complete his hat-trick. However, the goalkeeper has called for the team to improve and control games better.

"Until the last second, it was very stressful, we were 2-0 up against Norwich so we can not lose control of the game," he told MUTV. "We started giving chances away, they score at the end of the first-half, it's always tough, but I think we have to control the game more. Especially at home against Norwich.

"But I think they played a great game, in the end we fight, we fight until the end, and three great goals from Cristiano. We keep trying until the end with the fans, once again amazing, and then a great goal from Cristiano from the free-kick.

"A massive three points, we are still there fighting for the top four but for sure we need to keep improving because I think it's not enough if we keep playing like this. "

The win has breathed fresh life into United's top four hopes as defeats for Tottenham and Arsenal today have seen them move up to fifth and within three points of fourth place. De Gea has vowed that United will keep fighting until the final game to achieve Champions League qualification.

"Yeah this is Premier League it's not easy every game is tough you see today against Norwich bottom of the league but they fight, they nearly get points here it's good for us," the Spaniard added. "They dropped points but we need to keep improving. Focus on ourselves and keep winning games until the last one."
