Antonio Conte and Tottenham Hotspur will be hoping to capitalise on the confusion surrounding David de Gea's potential omission from the Manchester United squad.
De Gea looked set to miss the game against Spurs after a positive covid-19 test was returned. However, the Manchester United No.1 could potentially be back in starting contention following a negative covid-19 test shortly after testing positive, the Manchester Evening News reports.
Things have not been overly clear so far as to what is going to happen, but until this morning it was thought that Dean Henderson was set to start his first Premier League game of the season on his 25th birthday.
Henderson would have been hoping to impress Gareth Southgate, who is in the process of selecting his squad for the upcoming international fixtures. Despite not featuring in the league this season, Henderson is still a sought-after keeper.
Having reportedly had a transfer request rejected by the club, Henderson, who impressed on loan at Sheffield United previously, is currently caught in an unfortunate situation, needing minutes but not being afforded any.
Unlike Henderson, De Gea has dominated the Manchester United starting XI, being the joint most capped goalkeeper in the Premier League this season having played 28 games.
Manchester United has struggled to establish a run of consistent performances this season, often relying on individual brilliance to see them through games rather than a dominant tactical ideology.
Despite having suffered a slight dip in form of late in comparison to earlier this season, fans will be hoping that David De Gea will be able to start in what is one of United’s most important fixtures this season.
Whether De Gea is allowed to play or not, Tottenham will be hoping to take advantage of the confusion in the United ranks ahead of the game and gain a slight advantage in their race for the Champions League race. Given the form of their attackers in recent weeks, Spurs will be confident going into the game.
With the opportunity to go above Manchester United with a game in hand if they win, Conte will be determined to derail the Red Devils’ hopes of European qualification.
