(Picture: PA Media)The sentence handed out to serial sex offender David Carrick has prompted “multiple requests” to the Attorney General’s Office to review the 32 year term.
Carrick, one of the country’s worst ever sex offenders, joined the Met in 2001 before becoming an armed officer with the Parliamentary and Diplomatic Protection Command in 2009.
He pleaded guilty to 49 charges, including 24 counts of rape, but some are multiple-incident counts, meaning they relate to at least 85 separate offences, including at least 71 sexual offences and 48 rapes.
A spokeswoman for the Attorney General’s Office said it has received “multiple requests… under the Unduly Lenient Sentence Scheme” following the minimum term of 32 years handed to Carrick on Tuesday morning.
In a statement on Tuesday evening, the spokeswoman said: “The appalling and brutal nature of Carrick’s crimes against multiple women have been horrific to hear and we note the life sentence with a minimum term of 32 years, less time served, handed down to him today.
“We can confirm we have received multiple requests relating to David Carrick’s sentence under the Unduly Lenient Sentence (ULS) Scheme, the case will of course be considered for referral to the Court of Appeal.
“The ULS allows prosecutors, victims of crime and their families, and members of the public to ask for certain crown court sentences to be reviewed by the law officers if they think the sentencing judge made a gross error or imposed a sentence outside the range of sentences reasonably available in circumstances of the offence.
“The law officers have 28 days from the date of sentencing to refer a case to the Court of Appeal.”
One of his victims told the Mail Online: “In some ways I’d have liked to see him get a whole life term, but a minimum of 30 years is a good start – I would be surprised if he ever gets out, to be honest, and I hope he dies behind bars.”
The woman, known only as Emma, said during a break in the court proceedings Carrick locked eyes with her and mouthed the word ‘sorry’ across the court.
“I didn’t know what to make of it,” she is reported to have said, “It was confusing, and I wondered if he was playing with me in the way he used. But then I thought, “No more”, I’m stronger than he is.”
The Centre for Women’s Justice, which is in discussions with several of Carrick’s victims to explore potential legal action against the Met, said there were “further questions” about how Carrick was able to become a police officer and then be promoted and issued with a gun.
In a statement, they said: “These questions need to be answered fully and frankly, because the failure to bring him to justice earlier, left him free to rape, abuse and control many more women.
“Moreover, the lack of accountability, including a failure to consider whether those officers who considered Carrick suitable to be promoted and continue in his role may be guilty of misconduct is an additional insult to these women.”
Judge Mrs Justice Cheema-Grubb condemned the “malign influence” of men like Carrick and said the disgraced Pc, 48, acted like he was “untouchable” and used his job to take “monstrous advantage of women” over 17 years.
Carrick, who was described as a “monster” and “evil” by some of his dozen victims, “brazenly raped and sexually assaulted” them between 2003 and 2020, the judge said.
Carrick held a handgun to the head of one of his victims before raping her – and sent another a photograph of himself with a work-issue firearm, saying: “Remember I am the boss.”
In a televised sentencing hearing at Southwark Crown Court on Tuesday, Carrick was handed 36 life sentences with a minimum term of 32 years – minus his time spent on remand.
