David Cameron's shock return & Suella Braverman sacked

It has been an eventful Monday for British politics, with some surprises, as prime minister Rishi Sunak carried out his cabinet reshuffle.

Home Secretary Suella Braverman has been sacked from the role, following a series of events in the past few weeks, including her comments describing living on the street in a tent as ‘a lifestyle choice’, and her article for the Times in which the Fareham MP made allegations of police bias over pro-Palestine protests.

However, her moment in the spotlight was largely overshadowed by the return of former prime minister David Cameron.

He has been appointed as Foreign Secretary by Rishi Sunak, replacing James Cleverly, who takes over from Suella Braverman as Home Secretary.

It was a move that surprised many, and has led to criticism from some over the fact that the former PM will sit in the House of Lords rather than the House of Commons, meaning MPs won’t be able to challenge him on his decisions.

In this episode of The Standard, our Political Editor Nicholas Cecil discusses the controversy around Mr Cameron’s return, and considers what Suella Braverman might do next.

Nicholas also explains how David Cameron’s return might suggest a shift to centrist values for the Conservatives, and why Suella Braverman’s best chance to replace Rishi Sunak as party leader will come after the general election.
