David Brooks confirms he is cancer free and eyes Bournemouth return in touching statement

David Brooks has revealed he is free of cancer after posting an emotional statement confirming the news.

It was last October after leaving international duty with Wales that the Bournemouth attacker was diagnosed with stage II Hodgkin Lymphoma. The 24-year-old underwent medical examinations which confirmed the diagnosis.

He has since been undergoing treatment and on Tuesday he posted a lengthy message on his social media channels revealing his delight at being declared cancer-free. Brooks wrote: "It has been a few months since my last update and in that time I have thankfully completed my cancer treatment.

"I would like to say a huge thank you to all of the incredible medical staff for their amazing work and support throughout the process. Last week I met with my specialist having reviewed my final test results. I am delighted to say the treatment was successful and I can now say that I have been given the all clear am now cancer free.

"Those words feel incredible to say and I am so thankful for all of your messages and good wishes, these really helped me through the tough times. I am so excited to start the journey back to full fitness and continuing my football career.

"The lads at Bournemouth have had an excellent season so far and I am looking forward to being back at the Vitality to cheer the team on as we head into the most important fixtures of the season. I am determined to work my hardest over the months ahead and I can't wait to be back out there and playing in front of you on the pitch in the not so distant future.

"Thank you again. Best wishes, David."

Bournemouth and the Welsh FA sent messages of support along with clubs from all levels of the game after his announcement earlier in the season. The likes of Chelsea, Arsenal and clubs across the country joined a wave of social media support. Middlesbrough defender Sol Bamba, who announced he is cancer free earlier this season after overcoming his own battle, was one of the many players to send messages.

Brooks joined Bournemouth from Sheffield United in July 2018 and went on to impress in the Premier League for the Cherries in 2018-19 before injury saw him hardly feature the season after when the side were relegated.

He featured 32 times in their run to the Championship play-offs as they fell short at the semi-final stage. This season he played nine games in all competitions, the last of which came in late September.

His message comes just hours before Bournemouth prepare for a monumental Championship game at home to Nottingham Forest which pits second against third. A home win would ensure a return to the Premier League for Scott Parker's side with a game to spare, whilst a draw would also put them in a strong position heading into the final round of games.
