David Beckham shares selfie at Qatar World Cup as event backlash continues

David Beckham has shared a selfie at the World Cup in Qatar as the event continues to face criticism.

The football star shared a picture on Instagram, dressed in a sharp brown suit and red tie at the front of the pitch at Al Bayt Stadium ahead of England's match against the USA. Last night's game saw the team tie 0-0 in their Group B encounter.

Poking fun at the American team (@usmt) on their pronunciation of the sport as soccer, Beckham captioned the snap: "It's called FOOTBALL @usmt."

It comes as England and seven other teams announced they would not be wearing the OneLove armbands to show support for the LGBTQ+ community and human rights. The UK team announced the U-turn on the decision just three hours before their 6-2 win over Iran on November 21.

Homosexuality is illegal in the nation, which has also been accused of poor treatment of migrants and having an overall poor human rights record.

Beckham himself has also faced backlash for accepting the role as Qatar ambassador for the sporting event. It is reported that Becks could receive up to £10 million for the job.

He has since been blasted by the public as well as a number of celebrities for supporting the decision to host the event in the gulf state. Speaking at an event in Qatar On November 17, David praised the nation for their organisation of the event and said it would be a "platform for progress".

In an open letter, singer Will Young has slammed the former England captain, branding him "greedy" and urging David to donate his fee to LGBTQ+ charities.

Earlier this month, the footballer was given an ultimatum by comedian Joe Lycett to renounce his roll. If he did, the funny man would donate £10,000 to LGBT charities - if not, Lycett would shred the cash.

On November 21, after Lycett's message went unanswered by Beckham, Joe shared a clip which appeared to show him throwing the money into a shredder. He has since revealed that this was not real and has given the amount to good causes.

Former Spice Girl Mel C has risked a potential feud with former bandmate and wife of David Victoria Beckham, after the singer revealed she would reject the offer to perform at the football tournament - as she "wouldn't be comfortable" taking their money.
