David Beckham congratulated Marcus Rashford for scoring in England’s 6-2 win over Iran in their 2022 World Cup opener on Monday.
The Manchester United striker scored his first goal in a major international tournament within 50 seconds of coming off the bench with 20 minutes of the match left to play. The 25-year-old cut inside from the right to slide the ball home to put England 5-1 up.
He looked lively throughout his cameo, which was his first England outing since missing a penalty in the final of Euro 2020 last year. He sold several dummies to defenders during his time on the pitch and but for a block might have had a second goal to his name.

Delighted with his goal, Rashford took to Instagram to share his emotions about finding the net in a World Cup. He wrote: “Words can’t express my happiness in scoring at the World Cup.
“Great performance from the team, see you guys on Friday [vs the USA].” Beckham - who is an ambassador for the Qatar World Cup - posted a congratulatory comment on Rashford’s photo, writing: “Great goal mate,” with a clapping hands emoji.
United teammates also joined in, Bruno Fernandes posting: “What a player,” with a fire emoji while Harry Maguire - who assisted Bukayo Saka’s first goal and had a brilliant game prior to his substitution - added two fire emojis of his own.
Alejandro Garnacho gave several clapping emojis while Jack Grealish, who scored England’s sixth goal, said: “Rashyyy,” with a loveheart-eyes emoji. Opening goal hero Jude Bellingham also handed him a fire emoji while former United goalkeeper Sergio Romero - who played for Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final - commented: "Top Bro! Rashy!”
Reds teammate Luke Shaw played the whole 90 minutes and assisted Bellingham’s opener, having a strong game at left-back. England top the group after Wales and the USA shared a 1-1 draw.
England take on the US on Friday ahead of their final group game against Wales next Tuesday.
