David and Victoria Beckham's open-plan room champions a design aesthetic that will continue to impress in 2024

David and Victoria Beckham.

Every type of home has the potential to embrace the ever-popular modern farmhouse aesthetic – but arguably, none do it quite like David and Victoria Beckham's country abode.

The home, located among the Cotswold's hills (famously one of the most picturesque parts of southwest England), is the perfect modern farmhouse canvas – exhibiting an exposed brick wall and tall Crittall windows overlooking the landscape. These architectural assets, seen in their open-plan living and dining space, epitomize the modern farmhouse style that has shaped design trends in recent seasons, but it's possible to replicate the look in every style of home.

Architectural features aside, we can experiment with the modern farmhouse style with versatile textiles (including tartan, as seen in the Beckhams home), and rustic furnishings that translate to homes on either side of the Atlantic.

'Modern farmhouse is all about creating a warm and cozy atmosphere inspired by the slow living and simplicity of the countryside. Although not a new trend, the popularity of a modern farmhouse aesthetic has continued to rise in recent years,' comments Melissa Denham, an interior design expert from Hammonds.

'This trend is a reoccurring one we see slightly evolve year after year; in fact, the Instagram hashtag ‘modern farmhouse’ sits with 2.8 million posts and counting.'

As Melissa explains, this trend shows no sign of wavering (especially since the look is so prevalent in the Beckhams home), so how can we tap into the look?

The trend focuses on using natural materials such as wooden furniture, textiles (such as cotton), and brass finishings,' Melissa comments. 'A key characteristic of this style is that it should look well lived-in, so worn-out pieces and vintage elements are perfect.'

'If you like a modern farmhouse style but don’t know where to start, a great way to incorporate this is through small wooden crates, which can be used as storage or simple décor,' Melissa adds.

Alongside rustic furnishings (like David and Victoria's wooden table and tartan-upholstered armchairs), we can get the modern farmhouse look with the right hues.

'Modern farmhouse is inspired by the colors of the countryside while also keeping it fresh and contemporary. The typical color palette is a mix of neutral and pastel tones, more specifically, pastel pink, green, and blue, as well as browns and cream, Melissa says.

Patterns are similarly impactful. 'Picking the correct patterns is essential if you want to nail the modern farmhouse style. Some of the most popular patterns include floral and botanical-inspired pieces and stripe patterns.'

We can incorporate these patterns in various ways, including wallpaper, to create a statement. However, we should also look to soft furnishings like cushions, bedspreads, and rugs – yet another staple of the modern farmhouse look. We're investing in the aesthetic with these picks below.
