Dates of every bank holiday already agreed for 2022 and 2023

Most of us love a bank holiday and there are eight every year. There are a number which come on certain dates - such as Christmas Day being on December 25, and New Year's Day which is on January 1.

However these can sometimes end up being switched if the day of the bank holiday falls on a weekend. So this year the Christmas Day bank holiday is on Tuesday, December 27 - Monday, December 26 is already a bank holiday as it is Boxing Day. Likewise the bank holiday for January 1 has moved to Monday, January 2, according to Yorkshire Live.

But what about the other days off which most people look forward to. There is additional time off for Easter when both Good Friday and Easter Monday are bank holidays.

In May there are two - one at the beginning and one at the end. And then there is one in August.

However this year we got an extra two - one for the Queen's Jubilee in June and one for her funeral in September. And many are hoping there will be an additional one next year for the Coronation of King Charles III, however that has not yet been confirmed.

But whenever the bank holidays fall it can have an impact on benefit payments. It also means families can plan to have extra time together, which means it is important to know when they are. You can check specific dates on the GOV.UK website.

Bank holidays are a national public holiday in the United Kingdom, Ireland and Crown dependencies. The term refers to all public holidays in the UK and they are held under common law or declared by royal proclamation.

Employers are not forced to give workers paid leave on bank or public holidays. Gov.uk says: "If a bank holiday is on a weekend, a ‘substitute’ weekday becomes a bank holiday, normally the following Monday. Your employer doesn’t have to give you paid leave on bank or public holidays."

At also warns the days off might mean benefit payment dates change. It says: "Bank holidays might affect how and when your benefits are paid."

There are only two remaining in 2022. These are Monday, December 26 which is Boxing Day and Tuesday, December 27 which is the substitute for Christmas Day.

Below is a list of all the upcoming bank holidays in England and Wales in 2023:

  • Monday, January 2 - New Year's Day (Substitute day)
  • Friday, April 7 - Good Friday
  • Monday, April 10 - Easter Monday
  • Monday, May 1 - Early May bank holiday
  • Monday, May 29 - Spring bank holiday
  • Monday, December 25 - Christmas Day
  • Tuesday, December 26 - Boxing Day
