Judges on the Supreme Court are set to deliver their verdict on the Scottish independence referendum next week, it has been announced. The court in central London will reveal its outcome on Wednesday, November 23, 2022 at 9.45am.
The Scottish Government asked judges to decide whether the Bill relates to "reserved matters" - meaning it is outwith Holyrood's competence.
Nicola Sturgeon wants to hold a second vote on October 19 next year. The outcome of the hearing will determine if the First Minister can legally hold a referendum without the consent of the UK Government.
Former Prime Minister Boris Johnson refused to grant Sturgeon a Section 30 order which would allow a vote to go ahead, while his successor Liz Truss also ruled out another referendum. Current PM Rishi Sunak, who wants to improve the relationship between the UK and Scottish government, has also rejected a vote.
In short statement the Supreme Court account tweeted: "Judgment will be handed down in the case UKSC 2022/0098 - Reference by the Lord Advocate - Scottish Independence Reference Bill - on Wednesday 23 November 2022, 9.45am."
The verdict of the case will be streamed live on the Supreme Court website late this month.
Ahead of the 2014 referendum then Prime Minister David Cameron granted a Section 30 order which allowed Alex Salmond to hold a vote.
