Date set for 'crumbling' Belfast flats to be finally demolished

A "crumbling" block of flats in is due to be demolished by 2024, the Housing Executive has said.

The flats off Kings Road and Kinross Avenue in Tullycarnet, East Belfast, were approved for demolition last year after a contractor was unable to be found to carry out a refurbishment of the buildings.

Residents had spoken to Belfast Live regarding the state of the apartments saying they were "crumbling" around them and in a bad state of disrepair. One resident said that a tree had started growing in their chimney due to the lack of maintenance while others complained of mold and damp issues at the flats.

The NIHE has recently written to residents of the apartments to tell them of what will happen moving forward and to update them on repairs that are being carried out on the blocks.

It has also said that it hopes the demolition of the apartments will be complete by 2024 and that it is exploring future options for the site.

In a letter, the NIHE said: "The Department for Communities has now approved our proposal to demolish all blocks at the Kings Road complex. We aim to have all blocks demolished by 2024. In parallel, we will explore options for the future development of the site.

"I fully understand that this decision will have significant implications for you. Our local team is on hand to provide advice and assistance as you consider your options."

The NIHE said that residents will begin being moved out of the flats in the coming months and a member of staff will be in contact with residents about their housing options and the area they would like to move to.

It also said that repair works on the apartment blocks have begun taking place and that surveying work is ongoing to identify concrete repairs.

Local community group Tagit Tullycarnet said: "By now all tenants have received their letters to explain the demolition of Kings road and Kinross Avenue flats.

"This is a long process that can take up to 3-4years. The NIHE will be in touch with everyone this week or next to go through what this may mean for you.

"Joanne Bunting MLA has also ensured that her staff are available to contact for support from Monday Morning. As a community, we also want to support you and therefore if you want to chat at any time please get in touch.

"We realise this is a very stressful and uncertain time for you all, but please know you aren’t alone .

"End of an era, let’s hope that they are replaced with new housing for all of you as you deserve it."
