Darwin Nunez: Uruguay leave Benfica striker out of friendly against Panama as Liverpool transfer rumours swirl

Darwin Nunez has been left out of the Uruguay side set to take on Panama in Montevideo.

The Benfica striker has been strongly linked with a move to Liverpool and reports on Saturday suggested a deal was close after a fee of around £68.3m had been agreed.

Nunez scored 34 goals in 41 appearances across all competitions for the Lisbon giants, including two in as many games against Jurgen Klopp’s side in the Champions League quarter-finals.

A product of Penarol’s academy, the forward moved to Almeria in 2019 before joining Benfica a year later.

Prior to his goal at Anfield, Klopp said of the striker: “Extremely good looking boy, huh? And a decent player as well. Really good. I knew before, of course, but he played pretty much in front of me with his tough battles with Ibrahima Konate.

“He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him.”

Heavily linked with the likes of Manchester United and Paris Saint-Germain, the 22-year-old’s breakthrough campaign has not gone unnoticed amongst Europe’s leading clubs.

Nunez could serve as a replacement for Sadio Mane, though Bayern Munich will have to up their offer having seen a second bid rejected for the Senegal international.
