Darwin Nunez to Liverpool transfer could be great news for Arsenal - but only on one condition

Liverpool appear to be on the verge of completing a major summer transfer with the signing of Benfica striker Darwin Nunez - a player previously tipped to bolster Arsenal's attacking options.

Despite reports claiming a fee has been agreed between the Reds and Benfica, The ECHO have revealed those suggestions are wide of the mark. Although the club's interest is clear with the Uruguay international becoming a top target for manager Jurgen Klopp ahead of the new season.

Furthermore, with Liverpool hoping to structure a deal that would see them pay Benfica an initial €80million (£68.4million) set fee with €20million (£17.1million) in add-ons - the Merseyside giants could be about kickstart a chain of events that might affect Arsenal at some point over the course of the summer.

Amid links to Leeds United winger Raphinha and more surprisingly West Ham United and England international Jarrod Bowen, it seems as if Gunners manager Mikel Arteta wants to add a wide forward - in addition to a centre-forward - to his ranks before the transfer window closes in August.

With that said, a dream deal for many supporters would be the return of Serge Gnabry who could be sold by Bayern Munich this summer if he doesn't sign a new contract which has just over a year left to run as SportBILD claim he will be available for €40million (£34million).

However, as explained by The Athletic, Arsenal have not discussed the Germany international as an active target due to his expected wage demands. In fact, the report goes on to state that it would be a huge surprise if the 26-year-old ends up at the Emirates Stadium again.

Now, if the Gunners were to change their minds and pursue a deal for Gnabry, they'll most likely need to offload a winger first. As reported by football.london, Nicolas Pepe wants to leave having instructed his agent to find him a new club and Arsenal are said to be willing to accept a £25million fee for his services.

And the fact that Liverpool are closing in on a deal for Nunez could be great news as that move is linked to the future of Sadio Mane as he will likely be a replacement for the Senegal international who is attracting interest from Bayern and could be a direct replacement for Gnabry at the Allianz Arena.

This is perhaps the one scenario that could pave the way for some Arsenal fans to be granted their wish of seeing Gnabry playing for the club once again. But in order for this dream to become a reality, a change of heart from Arteta and technical director Edu would be required to alter the club's transfer plans significantly.

As things stand and going off the aforementioned report, it seems the chances of that happening are slim to none even if the pair would be sending out a huge statement of intent to the Gunners' top-four rivals next season by securing the forward's signature.
