Darwin Nunez set to cost Liverpool millions in fees against Man City

Darwin Nunez is set to cost Liverpool millions if he makes his tenth appearance for the club against Manchester City next weekend - as he is expected to do so.

Liverpool splashed out £64.2million (€75m) up front for the Uruguay international striker in the summer window, but the transfer included a number of add-ons that are set to be triggered over the next few years.

And the first of these could be triggered as early as next week when Liverpool play host to Pep Guardiola's champions Man City, after a mid-week trip to Glasgow to take on Rangers in the Champions League.

Nunez has so far made eight competitive appearances for the Reds this season - fewer than expected at this point due to the forward earning himself a three-match suspension for headbutting Crystal Palace's Joachim Andersen earlier in the campaign.

Should he feature against both Rangers and Man City, as he is expected to do so, then he will have hit his first milestone in a Reds shirt - 10 games played - which will trigger the need for Liverpool to pay Benfica an add-on fee.

According to Portuguese paper Record, Benfica are owed a total of £21.5m (€25m) from the Reds. £4.3m (€5m) will be paid after Nunez plays 10 games for the Reds, which is likely to be triggered at the weekend. Liverpool will later have to splash out £8.6m (€10m) after the striker makes 60 appearances.

The remaining £8.6m (€10m) owed to Benfica will depend on performance-related objectives, both individual and collective, being achieved. The exact details of what these consist of are unknown.

Nunez netted only his second goal of the season in Sunday's 3-2 defeat by Arsenal after he scored on his Premier League debut in the 2-2 draw with newly-promoted Fulham.

Klopp had very little to say about the striker following the Arsenal loss as he reflected on Liverpool's defeat.

"Good," said the German of Nunez's performance. "It was good, it was good. Sharp, good, involved in nearly everything, scored a great goal."

The defeat leaves Liverpool in tenth place after eight matches played, a staggering 14-points behind league-leaders Arsenal.

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta said of the win: "Thank you so much to the boys and our supporters for experiencing an afternoon like this. It's why we are here, and I really enjoyed it, especially the way we won.

"I've never seen it like this. You cannot imagine how much it helps the players and how much belief and confidence, how much support… it's one of the nicest things we've done since we've been together here - to unite everybody and feel like you go here and you're going to have some experience. It's great."
