Darwin Nunez has Liverpool 'ready to smash transfer record' and leave Manchester United reeling

Premier League giants Liverpool have reportedly tabled a club-record fee of £85million in a bid to bring Darwin Nunez to Anfield.

According to reports in Portugal, the frontman is a main target for Jürgen Klopp as he looks to rebuild his attack amid Sadio Mane Bayern Munich links.

The fee would smash Liverpool's record bill which currently stands at £75million - paid for centre half Virgil van Dijk from Southampton in January 2018.

Nunez netted 34 goals in all competitions this season and is one of the most highly-coveted forwards in world football as the Primeira Liga giants prepare to line their pockets from a mega sale.

But the Anfield side could be set for a battle to secure the 22-year-old's services.

Manchester United, Newcastle and Atletico Madrid have also noted interest in the star striker.

But Nunez, ideally, wants to play Champions League football, something that is not on offer at Manchester United nor Newcastle next campaign.

The lure of the European competition reportedly puts Liverpool in the driving seat.

Jurgen Klopp was hugely complimentary after coming face-to-face with the star twice in the space of a week back in April.

“He was physically strong, quick, was calm around his finish," said the Reds boss.

"Good, really good. I always say in these situations if he is healthy, it’s a big career ahead of him."

The Uruguay international's price tag was initial set at £67million, with the new bid blowing that asking price out the water, should the reports prove to be correct.

Spanish club Almería are due 20 per cent of any profit that Benfica make under the terms of his €24m transfer to the Lisbon club back in 2020.
