Darvel cup tie provides Cambuslang Rangers reward after recovering from '20 minutes of madness'

Cambuslang Rangers co-boss Billy Campbell says his side showed their mettle to book a big cup clash with Darvel.

The West of Scotland Football League Conference B title winners progressed to the quarter-finals of the Kilmarnock Pie WOSFL League Cup after a 9-8 penalty shootout win over Craigmark Burntonians.

Camby played out a 2-2 draw with the fifth-placed Conference A side, finding themselves two goals down inside 15 minutes.

Jay McFarlane-Letham got one back for Campbell’s side before Scott Anson levelled things after half-time.

Just two out of five penalties on both teams were scored and proceedings went

to sudden death, with Craigmark blinking first and the Somervell Park side progressing.

It sets up another cup tie with Premier Division title-chasers Darvel, who they lost to 5-1 earlier this year in the South Challenge Cup.

Campbell was pleased with how his side coped after having to call upon some youngsters due to injuries in their team.

He said: “I haven’t seen so many penalties in my life! But it was actually quite good. The first half we had 20 minutes of madness where we lost a couple of goals.

“We weren’t clicking and there was no real flow to our game. We had a few missing for the game so we had to bring a few of the young boys in, and they were great.

“They really helped us out and we got one goal back with Jay scoring the first. So we are really pleased with that.

“We got it to 2-1 without much flow or really playing, but over the course of the second half we deserved to

get our leveller and possibly a bit more.

“Craigmark were working hard and they had strong boys up front. They worked exceptionally hard and it was quite an enjoyable game to watch.

“We played a lot more like we have been doing in the second half.”
