Darren McGregor has opened up on how his new rplayer/coach role within Hibs came around as he takes up a new position with the Development squad.
The 36-year-old will work alongside Academy Director Steve Kean and Gareth Evans as he makes steps into a mentor/coaching capacity but can still continue playing. The veteran Easter Road stopper feels it is a great opportunity for himself and he can't wait to play a key role in helping the younger generation at the club both on and off the field.
McGregor was part of the legendary 2016 Scottish Cup winning team as he played the full match at Hampden at centre-back in the famous 3-2 win over his old club Rangers. He made 188 appearances in seven seasons with the club and was captain for the final match of last season, leading the team to a 4-0 win over St Johnstone.

On how the conversation over the new role came around, he told Hibs' official website: “At the end of last season I was lucky enough to have that unforgettable game where I was able to captain the team to a 4-0 win with my kids beside me as mascots.
“I think after that game I knew my playing time would be very limited next season.
"Steve Kean spoke to me shortly afterwards and proposed the idea that I could help out with the Development Squad in a mentor/coaching and playing capacity.”
He continued: “I feel it is a great opportunity for me as it can allow me to continue playing whilst also developing my coaching experience under the mentorship of Steve and Gareth.
“I have said many times before that if I am not able to play for Hibs, then the next best thing is to be able to help develop the younger guys.
“Going forward it is a new chapter in my life and I am excited to play a part in the development of these younger guys both on and off the field.”
