Darren Fletcher's role in Man Utd transfers emerges after Ralf Rangnick confusion

Manchester United manager Ralf Rangnick previously admitted to not knowing what Darren Fletcher’s role at the club is, but it seems the former midfielder will have a big role to play in transfers this summer.

The former United midfielder was appointed as the club’s football director in March 2021.

However, he has been a very visible presence in the United dug-out ever since Rangnick replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of November.

Fletcher’s place within the United manager’s immediate vicinity has often confused viewers, due to the fact most technical director’s at Premier League clubs reside in the board room.

And Rangnick even suggested he is not completely sure what role Fletcher carrier out at Old Trafford.

"What is his role in with regard to the club? I don't really know, to be honest,” the German said when asked about Fletcher’s overall role and contribution at Manchester United.

“I can only tell you what is happening in the training sessions, around the training sessions and around the games.

“In those areas, it is good to have him on board."

Now, a report from the Daily Mail claims Fletcher will have a large say in the future of Anthony Martial.

Martial was sent on loan to Sevilla in January, having grown frustrated and disillusioned with his lack of playing time under Rangnick.

The Frenchman only played 10 minutes of Premier League football under the former RB Leipzig boss, who evidently preferred Jadon Sancho, Marcus Rashford, and Anthony Elanga to the former Monaco ace.

However, Martial has hit the ground running since arriving at Julen Lopetegui’s side.

He has contributed one goal and one assist in his first four appearances for the La Liga giants, including a goal in their recent 3-1 victory over Dinamo Zagreb in the round of 32 stage of the Europa League.

And with the 26-year-old impressing with the six-time Europa League winner, it is believed United are now planning on retaining Martial.

With United set to appoint a new permanent manager at the end of the season, it has also been claimed that the Reds want to allow the next boss to decide Martial’s fate.

Paris Saint-Germain manager Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax boss Erik Ten Hag are the two overwhelming favourites to take over the reins at Old Trafford.

While Martial had very little involvement this season, the impending contract expirations off Paul Pogba, Jesse Lingard, Edinson Cavani, and Juan Mata would free up some space for the Frenchman.

Nevertheless, Fletcher’s views will be considered by the United board when they consider Martial’s time at Old Trafford.

Martial has looked impressive during his brief stint in Spain, but suffered an injury in his last outing after going down with a suspected hamstring injury.

Sevilla will face Real Betis on Sunday in a derby match, and Sevilla head coach Julen Lopetegui refused to rule Martial out of contention.

"We are not going to talk about problems or doubts. We are going to talk about the illusion that tomorrow's [Sunday's] game generates in us, which is very big and the illusion of facing a good rival, and in a derby, which we all know what it means," he told a press conference.

"We are going to see who arrives for tomorrow and who is fit, we are very much at the limit with many players, not just with the two of them (Martial and Diego Carlos), and we will see, every hour that passes is important.

"And today at the hotel and tomorrow morning we will analyse. Surely the starting XI will be XI that will have all the confidence and all the ability to put on a great game, which is what all Sevilla fans want tomorrow."
