Darren Bent believes Leeds United had greater chance of Premier League survival under Marcelo Bielsa

The worry of a potential return to the Championship is certainly increasing amongst the Leeds United fanbase.

The situation has become bleak as a result of the Whites inability to win matches over the last couple of months.

Their last victory came in the middle of January when Jack Harrison stole the show against West Ham at the London Stadium.

Since then, there have been seven defeats in eight games, 25 goals conceded and a managerial change.

Jesse Marsch looked to have got a tune out of his players against Leicester in his first game despite ultimately losing 1-0, but Leeds returned to square one in his maiden home game.

They were taken apart by Aston Villa in another humbling defeat and Steven Gerrard’s side deserved more than the three goals they put past Illan Meslier.

While the performances under Marcelo Bielsa were unsustainable, Leeds always seemed to create chances whereas, in the Villa defeat, they hardly got near the opposing goal.

Darren Bent is unsure that the decision to replace the much-loved Argentine with Marsch had any justification.

“It was a big, big risk, I questioned it,” he told talkSPORT.

“Usually the board will listen to the fans and if the fans kick up enough of a fuss, then the board will react.

“With the Bielsa thing, the Leeds fans still absolutely love him so there was no reason to make a change. I know they were leaking goals but I probably would have just given him until the end of the season.

“I know it wasn’t [working] but the Leeds fans were quite happy with it, I would’ve given him until the end of the season. Do Leeds look any better without Bielsa?”

Marsch is going to have to find ways to win Premier League matches immediately if he is to keep his new side in the division.

He has the perfect opportunity to do exactly that when Norwich visit Elland Road on Sunday in the epitome of the well-used cliché ‘relegation six-pointer’.

That will have to be one of a number of positive results for Leeds between now and the end of the season, something Bent isn’t convinced the new manager will be able to mastermind.

When asked whether he think the Whites have more chance of being relegated now, Bent replied: “Yeah, I do.”
