Darren Ambrose explains what Newcastle and Eddie Howe can achieve next season ahead of exciting summer window

TalkSPORT pundit Darren Ambrose believes Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe could take the Magpies to new heights next season after a strong showing in 2022.

Howe came in and helped to transform Newcastle's fortunes, replacing Steve Bruce in November 2021. At one point, the Magpies sat bottom of the Premier League table, having not won one of their opening 14 games.

2022 saw Newcastle climb out of the relegation zone and into mid-table, with a top 10 finish still being achievable on the final day of the season.

It was a remarkable turnaround which has sparked excitement on Tyneside ahead of what could be a huge summer for the club.

And Ambrose, who made 56 appearances for the Magpies during his three year spell in the North East reckons Howe and co could be set for bigger and better things next season.

"I hope so," said Ambrose when asked if Newcastle could finish in the top four next season by talkSPORT co-host Andy Goldstein.

"It'd be an unbelievable achievement being where they were when he came in, for the following season to compete for top four.

"I think he [Howe] needs the opportunity to take them the next level. I would be concerned if he started poorly next season, they could pull the trigger quickly. I hope he's given a fair shot because he deserves it from what he's done since he arrived at the football club.

"Ok, he's spent money at Bournemouth but he's never had this amount of finances to spend. So it's worth seeing if he can. What he's done, when he brought Guimaraes in, he didn't play the first four or five games because Eddie Howe improved Jonjo Shelvey and Joelinton. He's just won their player of the season!"
