In Week 12 against the Chicago Bears, the New York Jets will be inducting one of the greatest cornerbacks in the history of the game, Darrelle Revis, into their Ring of Honor. On that same day, he’ll be watching a cornerback that may one day join him in that group, Sauce Gardner.
Revis met with the media Friday in anticipation of his ceremony next week and talked about the Jets’ No. 4 overall pick and said he believes “the sky is the limit” for Gardner.
“I love his game,” Revis said. “I’m a lover of the game itself. It’s a different style of play but at the same time, he’s effective in what he can do. Him and D.J. Reed are doing a great job of being a dynamic duo. In this league, you need that. You need great cover corners and I think he can take on that legacy as being a Jet great.”
Gardner just needs one more interception to tie Revis’ total from his rookie season in 2007 and has half of Revis’ total number of tackles as a rookie. It’s certainly very early to discuss how far Gardner can go in his career, but you can’t argue his effective ness in his first nine games and the potential he is showing as one of the next great shutdown cornerbacks, just like Revis Island.
