Lions Pro Bowl cornerback Darius Slay was gracious enough to grant me a few minutes during his busy bye week. In conjunction with Campbell’s Chunky Soup, Slay surprised a group of Detroit firemen with a Thanksgiving-style dinner.
We talked about that and more.
You seem to have great chemistry on the field with Justin Coleman and Rashaan Melvin. What’s it like working alongside those guys?
They’ve been great. I knew Justin, but I didn’t know Rashaan much. He fit right in with the guys ASAP.
Do you have a competition over who can make the most plays?
Every day, that’s in practice. We’re always going at it, keep driving each other.
Do you have any favorite Lions uniform combination? Would you like the black jerseys to come back?
Yeah I would love to bring the black jerseys back, that’s for sure. I’ve been trying to get them back ASAP. My favorite one is the color rush, I like the all-grey. I got some fresh cleats to go with it.
How do you feel about the progress of the rookies, Will Harris and Amani Oruwariye?
Oh man, they’re good. They are learning fast and playing at a high level. I try to keep building them up as a rookie, it can be kinda tough, but I keep building them up to get them adjusted to the game.
Is there a lot of SEC smack in the locker room with so many different schools represented?
There’s one Ole Miss guy on the team (safety C.J. Moore) and I almost had to kick him out the other day.
Do you get a chance to watch much college football during the season?
We do get to watch a lot on Saturdays at the hotel and places. We watch as much as we can when we get a chance.
What are your thoughts on the new pass interference challenge and review rules?
I think it’s kind of pointless. It slows the game down. A lot of stuff at full speed looks one way but then they slow it down and it looks different and they call pass interference. It’s difficult…they aren’t making it too fair. They already make it unfair with the offense.
Since you’re now repping Chunky Soup, what’s your favorite soup?
Chicken noodle, that’s good stuff. I’m with them for their “Champions of Chunky” campaign with my mom Stephanie to give back to the local Detroit community.

It was a great experience. I can’t say enough about how much I respect what they do. They do a lot for this community.
How much do you love Martha Ford and what she’s done with the team?
A lot. She blessed me and my family with a great amount of fortune. She does so much in the community. She came to us (the players) and asked us what we could do as a group, as a team, to help build the city of Detroit up.
Thanks again to Chunky Soup for facilitating the interview.
