Dante Vanzeir hails former Celtic goalkeeper for Rangers penalty prep that led to Saint Gilloise glory moment

Union Saint-Gilloise hero Dante Vanzeir has credited former Celtic back-up keeper Logan Bailly for helping him score his penalty against Rangers.

The Belgian dark horses have built up a two-goal first leg lead in the Champions League qualifiers after a shock win against the Europa League runners-up. Their second goal came from a highly controversial penalty awarded against Connor Goldson, who was penalised for a handball after a shot ricocheted off James Sands onto his arm.

And USG star Vanzeir - who missed a crucial spot kick in the Belgian title playoffs last season against eventual winners Club Brugges - made no mistake past Rangers keeper Jon McLaughlin. He immediately celebrated by jumping into the arms of the club's goalkeeping coach Bailly - who made just three league appearances in two years at Celtic - and explained why. He said: "Logan and I talked a lot about penalties in the last few days, just me and him.

"He gave me a lot of advice, explaining to me, for example, how a goalkeeper reacts to penalty kicks against him. So I celebrated with him!

"I had confidence and I accepted my responsibility. I didn't think about it. I choose a corner in advance and luckily the goalkeeper went to the other side. In fact, I should have made it 3-0 but their keeper made a good save. I had to sprint 50 yards and was too tired in the end to finish it.

"That would have made it an even more beautiful night. But I am so happy with what we have achieved as a team. This is unbelievable and a dream for Union. However, next week we will have to defend this lead tooth and nail."
