Danny Murphy makes Mason Mount transfer claim as he hints at Liverpool's summer plan

Liverpool have been told that Mason Mount would be a “good value” signing for the Reds as they attempt to revamp their midfield.

Jurgen Klopp ’s side are in the market for a number of players to slot into the centre of the park with a number of their current options set to bid farewell to Anfield come the end of the season. Jude Bellingham was Liverpool ’s prime target but the Reds have recently pulled out of the race for the Borussia Dortmund star due to his extortionate price tag.

That has seen a number of more affordable options come to the fore over recent days including Chelsea midfielder Mount. It was previously suggested that the Reds could take advantage of the FFP situation at Stamford Bridge to seal a deal for the Blues’ academy graduate.

Former Liverpool midfielder Danny Murphy believes that Mount would represent a shrewd acquisition should the Reds make a move in the near future. Speaking on talkSPORT, he said: "I think they [Liverpool] need two or three [new midfield players].

“Ox [Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain] will go, [James] Milner will go, [Naby] Keita will go. Mount would be good value because he's got a year left. You're not going to have to pay silly money for him."

Amid the rumours over a move for Mount, however, the Chelsea hierarchy have been warned by Paul Merson that they would be letting one of their best players leave should they sanction his exit.

Speaking with Sky Sports, Merson said: “They need to get the manager in because he can then start trimming their squad. That’s their problem at the moment.

“Their next transfer window is massive. They need a new centre-forward and then need to clear out some players. But one of the players who’s supposed to be going is Mason Mount, he’s one of their best players. That can’t happen in my opinion.”

Another player who has been linked with a switch to Anfield this summer is Brighton star Alexis Mac Allister. The Argentine has shone for the Seagulls this season, whilst his performances were also key to his country lifting the World Cup in Qatar.

Whilst Murphy has admitted he is a fan of the playmaker, he suggests his style would not suit the Merseyside outfit - and a deal would also be costly. He added: "I wouldn't spend [on Mac Allister]. You would have to spend probably £60m for Mac Allister.

"I don't think he is what Liverpool need. He is a super player. I like him a lot. Brilliant technician. Clever footballer. But I think Liverpool need legs if Klopp is going to continually play the way he does."
