Danny Murphy explains why he's surprised James Garner is leaving Man United as he nears Everton transfer

Danny Murphy has said that he is surprised that Manchester United are letting James Garner leave, as a transfer to Everton edges closer in the final days of this summer's transfer window.

The midfielder is yet to make an appearance so far this season and a £15 million deal is close to sealing the United academy product's exit from Old Trafford. It was reported two weeks ago that Garner would be leaving the club and the deal to sign Casemiro has only accelerated his exit from the club.

However, despite the Brazilian's arrival, Murphy has expressed his surprise that Garner was allowed to leave, suggesting that the player's wide skill set is a reason to retain his services. Garner made 44 appearances last season as Nottingham Forest secured promotion to the Premier League via the play-offs.

“I am surprised,” Murphy said on TalkSport “He had a terrific season (at Nottingham Forest). He can play holding, box-to-box, he’s technical and can score a goal. I’m really surprised (United are letting him go).”

However, the move could be a sensible one for United, with the star not having played a single minute of Premier League action so far and at the age of 21 it is a good time to sell and make a profit on a player who is unlikely to play. He would also return to Merseyside having been born in Birkenhead.
