Danny Dyer says he doesn't blame his wife for 'clearing their bank account' when she discovered he had cheated in the past.
The former EastEnders actor, 45, recalls his now-wife Joanne Mas changing her phone number and stopping him from seeing their eldest daughter Dani Dyer when the actor's infidelity was exposed publicly in 2000.
Danny refers to his past mistakes as a 'mad period' of his life and gushes about how important his childhood sweetheart and their family are to him these days.
Speaking in a new interview, the former soap star explores his working class background, the classism he is subjected to and reveals he once checked himself into a psychiatric unit, where he realised he has male abandonment issues.
The dad-of-three also discusses his romance with wife Joanne, who he met as a teenager, and looks back on some of the rockier moments from their love story.
Danny and Jo tied the knot in a beautiful ceremony in Hampshire on 3 September 2016, with their three children - including Love Island star Dani - all present to watch their parents become husband and wife.
But before the Mick Carter actor wed his childhood sweetheart, his infidelities often made the front pages of national newspapers.
During his chat with The Times, Danny's interviewer states how when it first happened in 2000, Joanne changed her phone number, cleared their bank account and wouldn't let him see Dani - with Danny adding he didn't blame his wife for doing so.
When asked why he put his partner through so much, Danny says: "It was a mad period. I do now realise what's important to me are my family. They are everything."
The actor continues to muse what prompted those 'mad periods' - explain how therapy has helped him stopped doing stupid things.
He reveals in the interview how he once spent a month in a place he sometimes calls a 'psychiatric unit' and sometimes 'rehab'.
Danny explains how the treatment centre was in South Africa and he flew over there six years ago, due to feeling like "a lost soul".
He adds how he shunned celebrity-favourite The Priory, as he didn't want "linen sheets or candles or any of that b*****ks", and explains how he wanted a place where he'd have to sleep in a dorm "and have to scrub the khazis".
Danny continues to discuss his relationship with his father and male abandonment issues and how he felt like an imposter before seeking out therapy and mental health services.
"When you go to therapy, fame doesn't exist. It's stripped away," Danny explains.
"You have to learn to be true to yourself. That's what you need to be every single day when you open your eyes and bounce out of bed."
This isn't the first time Danny has discussed his romance with Joanne - previously discussing how long it took to get him down the aisle, despite meeting his wife they were just 13 years old.
"I don't know what took me so long [to get married], really, it's crazy," he told host Jonathan Ross in 2018.
"[We've been together] thirty years. I appreciate it now, I get it.... she is incredible my wife."
Discussing weddings in general with daughter Dani last year, Danny pondered why anyone wants to splash so much cash when it comes to tying the knot.
"This is the thing, why the f**k do we get married?" Danny asked on his podcast, with his disappointed daughter chiming in to say: "No, no, no, no, it's a companionship."
He continued: "You know like, listen to Ruth [their listener's] f**king dilemma - you get married for other people. 'Oooh who's going to come? Who's going to sit where?' F**k all that."
Understanding her dad's point of view, Dani seemingly agreed, adding: "There's so many politics when it comes to the wedding. You do actually make it more about everyone else rather than you."
"Exactly," Danny declared.
"It's actually meant to be a celebration of your love, right, between you and someone else. But all of a sudden it becomes about every other f**ker."
