Danilo handed Alfredo Morelos Rangers 'problems' comparison

Danilo has been told he must start to trouble defences as Rangers' first-choice striker - just as Alfredo Morelos did.

The Brazilian forward signed for the Ibrox club earlier this summer in a £5million deal from Feyenoord.

The 24-year-old is still settling into life at the club, as well as in Glasgow.

He scored his first goal in a Light Blues jersey at the weekend as Michael Beale watched his team thump Livingston 4-0.

He led the line last night again as Rangers progressed to the Champions League play-off round with a 3-2 aggregate win over Servette. The game finished 1-1 on the night in Switzerland, with James Tavernier netting for the visitors.

Danilo failed to make the desired impact in the game and the No.99 was eventually substituted off for Cyriel Dessers in the second half.

He missed a golden chance during the first, missing a sitter from around six yards out. The ball may have bounced up, but it was a poor attempt at a finish from the forward after a superb cross from fellow new player Jose Cifuentes.

And former Gers attacker Steven Thomson has urged the player to show more of his qualities.

He told BBC Sportscene: "It is too early to make any judgements really just now. You are better placed to make a judgement on them in a couple months time.

"But I felt as though Danilo struggled in the game, to have an impact. It didn't really suit him and he misses the chance.

"Probably his confidence and head probably goes down a wee bit. Dessers offers something different, more physical but not quite as mobile.

"The jury is out for me. The thing is when you are replacing Morelos, not talking about his last couple of seasons, but the amount of goals that he scored and the player he was when he was at his peak, he could cause defences all sorts of problems.

"I felt Danilo didn't cause problems with his movement, running at players, didn't look a real goal threat.

"He has a lot to do but we are three games into his new club and he hasn't got off to a flier, and hopefully for him and for Rangers he can build up into the player they want him to be."
