A convicted rapist has escaped from prison.

Daniel Thompson, 34, failed to report for roll call at 4.45pm on Friday at Leyhill Prison, about 28 miles south-west of Cheltenham, police said.

Thompson had last been seen at 11.45am at the facility.

Avon and Somerset Police said he had been jailed for breaching a court order after serving a 10-year sentence for rape.

He is described as being white and of slim build, 5ft 11ins tall with dark coloured short hair, brown eyes and is clean shaven.

He has a tattoo on the right side of his neck.

He was wearing a dark blue tracksuit when last seen.

Thompson has links to Chester, Warrington and Darlington and may use the name Gavin Barry, police said.

Anyone who sees him is asked to call 999 and cite IML 484890 or contact Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
