Will the Washington Commanders make an attempt to move up to No. 1 in the 2024 NFL draft?
Ultimately, that’s not Washington’s decision. The Chicago Bears hold the No. 1 overall pick and are expected to select USC quarterback Caleb Williams and trade Justin Fields. The rumors are the Bears would want a “historic haul” for any team moving into the No. 1 position.
NFL draft analyst Daniel Jeremiah is not against the Commanders potentially moving up to No. 1 to select Williams, but he wouldn’t make an “unprecedented” offer.
“I don’t know that I would say ‘unprecedented,'” Jeremiah said on Sunday’s edition of “The Rich Eisen Show. “I think if you can get something done that’s within reason, I could make a case for that.”
Everyone always says if you find your guy, do whatever you can to land him. Jeremiah offers a good reason why he wouldn’t make a “historic” offer to move up one spot.
“I like the other two quarterbacks. I think there’s three good quarterbacks in this draft that I think are really highly graded.”
The other two quarterbacks Jeremiah is referring to are Drake Maye (North Carolina) and Jayden Daniels (LSU).
Jeremiah offers another potential reason why Washington may not be willing to move up one spot.
“When you look at (new general manager) Adam Peters coming over there, you always carry your scars with you, and maybe the one do-ever that he might have with John Lynch, there is the massive haul to go up to get Trey Lance that didn’t pan out,” Jeremiah said.
While no one knows how much of a role Peters played in the 49ers’ decision to give up a massive haul for Lance only to trade him after two seasons, he was there and seems unlikely to part with that type of draft capital. Jeremiah explains that while Williams may be rated higher, the difference between him, Maye, and Daniels would be close enough that Washington would be happy landing either and keeping its picks.
