Daniel James move, Lucas decision, loan calls - Tottenham transfer deadline day state of play

Transfer deadline day is finally here. Fabio Paratici now has just a matter of hours left to finalise Tottenham's transfer business for the summer before the window slams shut at 11pm this evening.

After a very busy few months at the club so far, Tottenham have already completed eight deals for Antonio Conte to bolster his squad for the new campaign. Fraser Forster, Djed Spence, Clement Lenglet, Cristian Romero, Ivan Perisic, Yves Bissouma and Richarlison have all signed permanent deals in N17, with Destiny Udogie joining from Udinese on a long-term contract but returning to the Serie A side on a season-long loan.

So what could happen at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium ahead of the 11pm deadline? football.london takes a look at the current state of play.

Outgoings

Tottenham have been quite active in the transfer market so far this week in terms of outgoings. Having previously seen Giovani Lo Celso and Tanguy Ndombele depart on loan to Villarreal and Napoli, respectively, the final two players of the out-of-favour quartet have now moved on.

Sergio Reguilon has returned to Spain after penning a season-long loan deal with Atletico Madrid, while Harry Winks' loan move to Sampdoria was confirmed late on Tuesday evening. According to the Serie A side's website, Sampdoria have the option to purchase the 26-year-old.

Another loan deal that could take place on deadline day is Bryan Gil returning to Valencia for the season. Impressing in his spell with Los Che last campaign, Valencia boss Gennaro Gattuso admitted at the weekend that a deal for the Spaniard is done, but it won't be signed off until Tottenham bring in a replacement for the youngster.

If Spurs cannot bring in a player to take Gil's place in Conte's side, the 2021 summer signing may be set to remain with Tottenham until January. Lucas Moura has also found himself in the headlines ahead of deadline day, with The Telegraph reporting that Aston Villa are considering a move for the winger.

If indeed Steven Gerrard's side do launch an offer for his services, Spurs have a big call to make over the experienced player. Tottenham cannot leave themselves too short, and exits for both Lucas and Gil would leave them needing to bring in two players.

One deal that now doesn't look set to happen is Japhet Tanganga heading off to Serie A. Heavily linked with a switch to Italy in previous transfer windows, AC Milan and Roma, as well as Nottingham Forest, have been mentioned in regards to signing the 23-year-old before deadline day. However, football.london reported on Monday that the player now looks on course to remain in north London after they had decided to block his exit.

While, of course, a deadline day change of heart can never be ruled out, Spurs would have extremely limited time to bring in another defender if they give him the green light to move elsewhere. Another player in the same boat as Tanganga is Pape Matar Sarr, who could also now be set to stay at Tottenham beyond the deadline.

Looking set to exit on loan to gain some more first-team experience as there will be limited opportunities for him under Conte, the Senegal international looks on course to be the fifth midfield option with a number of games coming up over the next two months.

Following Oliver Skipp's recent injury and Rodrigo Bentancur's absence at West Ham, Spurs must ensure they have cover in the middle of the park. A number of the club's academy players have departed on deadline day in the past, and this could be the case once again if the right opportunities arise.

Incomings

All eyes will, of course, be on possible new signings coming in through the door at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium before the deadline. Strengthening in a number of areas so far, a further attacking option is a possibility if Paratici can find his man for Conte.

That, in turn, would allow Gil to seal his move to Valencia, as well as giving the boss the two players for each position he wants in his Tottenham squad. One player that has been linked with a switch to Tottenham over the past week is Leeds United's Daniel James.

Only sealing a move to Elland Road 12 months ago after departing Manchester United, the Welshman could well find himself on the move again amid links with Spurs, Everton and Fulham. Tottenham are reportedly in talks with Leeds United over the Welshman, but it will be about striking the right deal for both parties.

Leeds are said to want a permanent deal if he is to move on, while Paratici is believed to want a loan with an option to buy. Atletico Madrid's Yannick Carrasco had been linked with Tottenham earlier in the week, but speculation over a move for the Belgian is believed to be wide of the mark.

Spurs had been tipped to sign another centre-back ahead of the deadline, but that was always going to be dependent on Tanganga moving to Italy or not. As Conte admitted in his recent press conferences that if a player from his squad departs, then a new player would have to come in, Tanganga's likely stay at the club looks set to have big implications on the possibility of another new defender signing on the dotted line.
