A loud "bang" was heard before police closed a "dangerous road" where a man was killed.
The ECHO previously reported police were called to the eastbound carriageway of Princess Way in Seaforth at around 11.15pm on Wednesday, January 11. At the scene they found a man had been hit by a HGV.
Despite best efforts from emergency workers, the 43-year-old man died from his injuries a short time later. Nearby residents told the ECHO they heard a "loud bang" shortly after 11pm and "lights and sirens" as the road was closed. Eye witnesses reported seeing desperate attempts to save the man's life.

One resident said he saw the man crossing the road when he was hit by the lorry and said it was "horrifying". Officers confirmed the man's next of kin have been informed and an investigation has been launched.
One woman, who lives nearby, said she left for work at around 5.30am and saw the remnants of police tape so "knew something bad had happened". She told the ECHO: "This road is quite dangerous, you get people jumping over the fence to cross or a lot of traffic and cars.
"I have a granddaughter and I won't cross this road because there's just always traffic coming from all directions."
One passer-by, who wished to not be named, said what happened was "tragic" after they heard the news on Thursday morning.
Tributes have poured in for the man as ECHO reader Rebecca Taylor said: "RIP Mate, thinking of your family at this heartbreaking time." Michael Davis added: "Going to be sadly missed, lovely lad."
The driver of the HGV is assisting with enquiries. Detective sergeant Kurt Timpson from the Force’s MATRIX serious collision investigation unit said: "We have launched an investigation following the death of a 43-year old man who has died following a road traffic collision on Princess Way last night.
"His family have been located and are being supported by specially trained family liaison officers. Our thoughts are with the man’s family and we are determined that our investigation with get the answers they so desperately need.
"I would like to make a direct appeal to the public to assist us as we begin that process. My appeal is to anyone who has dash camera CCTV fitted in their vehicle that may been travelling on Princess Way and surroundings roads at between 11pm and 11.30pm on Wednesday evening to make contact with the investigation team as you may have inadvertently captured the lead up to this incident.
"Our officers can recover CCTV in person or remotely to check if it has captured any footage that may assist the investigation of this collision. In addition if you have CCTV on your home or business that could help, please get in touch. Your help however insignificant it may seem, could be vital to us.
