Dancing with the Stars' Selma Blair dances blindfolded in moving tribute to late mum

Selma Blair moved the audience to tears with her latest Dancing with the Stars performance as she danced blindfolded during a tribute to her late mother Molly Ann Beitner.

The 50-year-old actress performed a rumba to Sheena Easton's For Your Eyes Only during the show's James Bond night on Monday and explained the special meaning behind the song choice.

Speaking during her introduction, Selma said she and her mum used to dance and sing along to the song. It eventually became a very special number for the two of them.

Molly Ann passed away in 2020 at the age of 82 after a battle with cancer.

"I just really do miss her so much. She was my person in life.

"I wanted to do everything to make her proud. I don't think anyone ever thought I would try dancing in my life and I love it so much," Selma said ahead of the show.

Professional dance partner Sasha Farber added: "They say that time's meant to heal everything, but I think time just keeps you moving forward. It never heals anything."

For their performance, Selma danced the majority of the rumba blindfolded to help with the “sensory overload” caused by her multiple sclerosis.

Selma, who is well-known for her role in Cruel Intentions, was diagnosed with MS in 2018. It affects her balance and motor skills as well as her memory.

Due to her mobility being impaired, she often walks with a cane for support.

The actress' dance partner Sasha explained the blindfold was used to combat Selma's MS and subsequent tendency for sensory overload. It was also used to improve the trust between the partners.

"I always saw Selma close her eyes a lot when she would feel a disconnection from her brain to her body. Learning steps for Selma is challenging in the sense that I can see her body try to do it.

"And I know that she can do it, but the message stops, and it doesn't allow to happen. And she closes her eyes," the dancer told Entertainment Weekly.

He added: "I found that she would always be comfortable in that situation. I wanted to see how this would help the performance, and I remember putting it on her and she had goose bumps."

Selma said the challenge of wearing the blindfold brought her closer to her partner.
