Dancing with the Stars host Alfonso Ribeiro has addressed the criticism he faced over an "inappropriate" question he posed on the show.
During the latest episode of the dance competition, the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air star asked actor Trevor Donovan and his professional dance partner Emma Slater if there was more to their rumba due to the pair's intense chemistry.
Emma, 33, and Trevor, 43, had danced to Elvis Presley's Always on My Mind, with Alfonso asking if their chemistry during the routine was real or acting.
The host said: "Now clearly you are over the fear of dancing, but the chemistry between you two, now I just gotta know are those your acting skills or is that real?"
Emma recently split from her ex-husband Sasha Farber who is also a pro dancer on the show. Sasha was in the room when Alfonso asked the question.
Replying to his comment, Emma said: "Wow, Alfonso. What?!" while Trevor stayed silent for the moment.
The 90210 actor eventually said: "If you're really doing a good job acting, it all comes from truth, so there's something real in every performance."
Alfonso received a lot of backlash for his comment and has now explained why he said it.
"I knew nothing was happening there because she was at my house for my birthday. I talk to Sasha, like I'm aware of everything going on," he said on the Sway's Universe podcast.
Alfonso added: "And then America was like 'That was rude because her husband is right there.' I was like 'That was a joke. We were playing. Aww, dang'."
After the episode aired, Emma took to Instagram to praise Trevor for his dancing skills.
Sharing a video of their rumba, Emma wrote: "I still can’t believe he did that! @trevordonovan so proud of you for this Rumba!!
"Errrrr maybe there’s a hidden dancer inside of you, I don’t know! Can’t wait to work hard again this week and push to make you the best dancer you can be.
"Love how much you are quietly enjoying this dancing thing massive thanks to everyone who voted!!!!!"
