Vanessa Bauer has admitted that things didn't 'go to plan for her and Joey Essex in the Dancing on Ice final, after fans flooded Twitter with complaints about their Bolero routine on Sunday night.
While they have been consistent high scorers and big favourites with the judges all series, Joey and Vanessa had to fight to even be in this weekend's live finale, having landed in the skate-off at the end of the semi. Thankfully for the, as rivals Siva Kaneswaran and Mollie Gallagher were sent packing, Joey and Vanessa received the unanimous backing of all four judges, sealing their place in the battle for the 2023 trophy.
Given their skate-off setback a week earlier, bookies made Joey and Vanessa the outsiders to win Dancing on Ice going into the final, so it came as a bit of a shock that they finished one place higher than expected, as THe Vivienne and Colin ended up bowing out in third place.
In keeping with Dancing on Ice tradition, the final two couples went onto skate Torvill and Dean's famous Bolero as they bid for victory and, having seen eventual champions Nile and Olivia deliver a flawless routines, Joey and Vanessa's was noticeably below par, with viewers accusing Joey of being 'talked around' the rink by Vanessa.
Judge Christopher Dean pointed out there'd been a few errors and then, after Nile and Olivia had been announced as winners, Joey himself admitted: "I missed a few steps...shhhh"
As some viewers argued that Joey's mistakes were proof that he should never have been in the final two, VAnessa took to Instagram to own up to things not going as well as they'd hoped. Sharing a photo of her and Joey doing Bolero on her story, the pro skater wrote: "It was our most skillful skate to date and we were over the moon to perform it.
"Unfortunately, ut didn't quite go as planned but we got through it!"
Vanessa added that rumoured boyfriend Joey had 'smashed the whole series,' before telling fans that she couldn't wait to share the video of their dress rehearsals Bolero.
