Dancing On Ice's Kye Whyte crashes out of this week's show with injury after nasty fall

Dancing On Ice star Kye Whyte will no longer appear in this weekend's show after suffering an injury.

The professional BMX racer sprained his knee after falling on ice in rehearsals.

Medical professionals advised the Olympic athlete it was safer to avoid skating this weekend - and ITV confirmed he will no longer compete on Sunday's show.

An ITV spokesperson said: "During rehearsals for this Sunday’s show, Kye fell on the ice and sustained an injury and will therefore not perform in this weekend’s show."

Kye said: "It’s an unfortunate accident. I’ve trained and worked hard with Tippy to perform this weekend.

"For me, as an athlete, I’m used to stuff like this happening where you get injured and can’t compete.

"I’m more sad for Tippy, she’s worked hard so not being able to skate is obviously upsetting.

"We both really wanted to do this number, it’s a cool performance and we put a lot of effort into it.

"I was so happy and excited for everyone when they skated last weekend. I was watching and couldn’t wait to skate this Sunday. I’ll be there cheering everyone on!"

The silver medallist won Great Britain's first ever BMX Olympic medal last year.

Speaking before the show started, Kye said: "When I did the audition I kind of related it to roller-skating so I think I did pretty well… I think the thing I’m really confident about is I don’t really mind if I fall, I’m quite fearless."

He continued: "I think I can win Dancing On Ice. I’d love to see if I can make the final because, as I said, I’m very competitive. You know what? I want to make the final!”

Meanwhile, Rachel Stevens has opened up about her big return to Dancing On Ice.

Rachel fell on the same wrist a number of times, before the final time left her with a panful fracture that ruled her out of being on the ice.

While she has managed to rehearse her routine, she has only been back on the ice since Monday, and hadn't been allowed on the rink for six weeks to allow her injury to heal.

The former S Club 7 singer injured her wrist in December, and was unable to return to the ice for six weeks.

Now that all is well, she and Brendyn are ready to face their debut on the ice this weekend, while she revealed getting back on track has been "tough".

Speaking on This Morning on Friday, Rachel told hosts Dermot O'Leary and Alison Hammond how she was doing, and how she was preparing for her first performance live to the nation.

She said: "It's been eventful, that's for sure. We have been doing a lot of training off ice in the lead-up to the show," revealing it was Monday that she was finally able to skate.

Brendyn added: "It was good, we did a lot of training off the ice and that translated the best it could when we got back on."

Rachel said of appearing on the show last weekend, but not going on the ice: "I was so nervous, I thought what is going on? I'm not even skating, but the frustration was the not being able to get on the ice.

"We've had six weeks or more away from it, so getting back on Monday and having to learn the routine has been a bit of pressure."

Dancing On Ice 2022 continues Sundays at 6:30pm on ITV.
