Dancing on Ice's Joey Essex admits 'costly' mistake as ITV viewers question final placings

Joey Essex has admitted he made a crucial mistake in the Dancing on Ice final, one which may have cost him victory, as he lost out to Nile Wilson on Sunday night. And his admission came as some viewers hit out at the fact that The Vivienne didn't make the last two ahead of him.

The underdog going into the all important final live show of the series, TOWIE and Ex on the Beach star Joey had been earmarked as a 'dead cert' for third place by the bookies but he and professional partner and rumoured girlfriend Vanessa Bauer upset the apple cart, finishing a place higher than predicted and challenging Nile and Olivia for the latest Dancing on Ice title.

There was a three way tie on the leaderboard after round one, the Showcase skates, as Joey, Nile and The Vivienne all got 40 out of 40; with Joey and Vanessa getting top marks for their Hercules themed routine. And then, after The Vivienne and Colin exited the competition in third, Joey and Vanessa and Nile and Olivia got to skate to Torvill and Dean's Bolero.

Joey and Vanessa went second and it was Christopher Dean who first picked up on things going slightly awry during the performance, with him telling Joey: "You've got the emotion. There was a lot of intricacy in there; there may have been a few missteps I think."

In the dying moments of the show and, in the aftermath of Nile and Olivia winning Dancing on Ice, Joey gave a candid admission on his final skate, telling hosts Phillip Schofield and Holly Willoughby: It's been amazing, I'm so happy for Nile and Olivia. I missed a few steps...shhhh," before adding: "Best time of my life; thank you everyone!"

Viewers at home picked up on Joey's error in his Bolero, while also appreciating the drama of his and Vanessa's routine. Taking to Twitter, one posted: "Felt joey realised how important it was doing the bolero and saw the pressure was getting to him," with a second reacting: "Poor Vanessa looked so upset after that Bolero routine with Joey."

Others, far from impressed by Joey's Bolero was more harsh with their critiques and angry they didn't get to see The Vivienne skate hers instead. Taking that stance, one viewer fumed: "vivienne was robbed. this bolero was so bad." Voicing the same sentiments, another wrote: "Honestly they shouldn’t have even been in the top 2 & that bolero just proves why"
