Dancing on Ice: Regan Gascoigne is now 'mates' with his dad after a strained relationship

Dancing on Ice returned to our screens last night (January 16), and fans of the show have a feeling that one of this year's stars is going to be one to watch.

Regan Gascoigne was one of the star-studded cast members to make his debut on the ice on Sunday night, paired with American ice skater Karina Manta.

But although the 25-year-old has only been on the ice once as a child, he might have a pretty good chance of making it far in the competition, given his education.

The son of former England footballer Paul Gascogine, Regan fell in love with the performing arts when he was just six years old, and enrolled into the Hammond Ballet School in Chester at the age of eight.

Regan then went on to study Musical Theatre at Tring Park School, an independent school in Hertfordshire.

But all of his dancing and arts knowledge might not be Regan's only advantage, as his family may have given him some tips before he popped his skates on, given that he is not the first Gascoigne to compete in a reality TV series.

His elder sister, fashion model Bianca, was a contestant in the 19th series of Celebrity Big Brother in 2017, and has competed in the Italian version of Dancing With The Stars.

In 2021, their father Paul appeared on 'Isola de Famosi', the Italian take on I'm a Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!', but had to leave after 38 days full of trials and sunbathing naked on a beach in Honduras after sustaining a shoulder injury.

Paul and Regan, whose mother is Paul's ex-wife Sheryl Gascoigne, have had a strained relationship in the past, as the football star has battled alcoholism for years. Although, they claim to have put that behind them now.

Appearing in a documentary when he was 12, Regan said: "“If I could wish, I’d wish that he would go away from us. He’s probably going to die soon.

“Because he’s the top player doesn’t mean he’s a good dad or good person to be with, does it, really?”

Earlier this month, Paul told The Sun that he and his son 'never talk about the past, ever', and just focus on the present when they spend time together 'as mates'.

Following their strained relationship, the pair bond over their shared OCD diagnosis, and Paul supported his son when he came out as bisexual.

The 54-year-old said: "'When we get together we just feel like we've never been away from each other. Now we hang out as mates. It's special.

"I feel lucky."

Dancing on Ice returns to our screens on Sunday, January 23, at 6.30pm.
