Dancing on Ice bosses sign Arlene Phillips up for new guest role on ITV show

Dame Arlene Phillips, 78, is set to join the Dancing On Ice family.

14 years on from her 'ageist' axe from the Strictly Come Dancing panel, the West End legend is rumoured to be joining the ITV show later this month.

Arlene - who enjoyed a stint on I'm a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! last year - was one of the names touted to replace John Barrowman on the series before Oti Mabuse was unveiled as the new judge.

It's now been reported that the dancer will join the ITV series for a one-off appearance - the first time Dancing On Ice has ever had five judges sitting on the panel.

A TV insider has told The Sun that ITV bosses have been keen to sign the star up and "have been talking to her for months about her guest slot on the show".

"She has decades of dance experience under her belt which producers wanted to draw on and enhance the panel even further," they told the publication.

"Plus, audiences will be thrilled to see her back judging on primetime TV, just as she once was on Strictly."

Arlene is said to be joining existing judges Ashley Banjo, 33, Jayne Torvill, 64, Christopher Dean, 63, and Oti Mabuse, 31, on February 20.

The choreographer's rumoured return to reality TV comes 14 years after her sensational axe from Strictly Come Dancing.

The star was dumped from the BBC series in 2008 amid claims she was 'too old' at 64 for primetime TV.

Former MisTeeq pop star Alesha Dixon replaced her on the judging panel - intensifying the ageism row due to the fact the singer was just 30-years-old at the time.

Reports surrounding Arlene's Dancing On Ice cameo come as the ITV series could see host Phillip Schofield miss this weekend's show due to Covid.

The This Morning presenter, 59, revealed he had tested positive for Covid on Monday, after enjoying a family outing to the theatre over the weekend.

Phillip will also need negative lateral flow tests on days five and six if he wants to return to Dancing On Ice alongside co-host Holly Willoughby on Sunday night.

If the star is still testing positive come the weekend, are said to be keen to create an all-female hosting duo for this weekend's edition of the skating show.

Amanda Holden is reportedly ready to step in and keep Phillip's place warm on the show if needed.

"ITV are a progressive channel who want to reflect the modern world as much as possible," a source told The Sun earlier this week.

"And while Dancing on Ice ’s bosses are gutted to see Phillip forced to temporarily step out of hosting duties, that also presents an opportunity to have two women front the show.

They added: "Producers have seen the energy that Tess Daly and Claudia Winkleman have brought to Strictly and they’re curious to see how Holly bounces off another female presenter."
