Australian ballet principal artist Amy Harris is taking her final bow after 22 years with the national company, with a leading role in Marguerite and Armand.

The ballet is based on La Dame aux Camelias, a novel and play by Alexandre Dumas Fils first published in 1848, and part of the inspiration for Baz Luhrmann's Moulin Rouge more than 150 years later.

Harris will dance as Marguerite in the final performances of her 22-year career at the Sydney Opera House with opening night Friday.

She began dancing at the age of three and was accepted into The Australian Ballet School at the age of 15, joining the national company in 2002.

Her performance is part of a double bill by legendary choreographer Sir Frederick Ashton, also including Shakespearean adaptation The Dream.

An adaptation of A Midsummer Night's Dream, the dance was created for The Royal Ballet in 1964 to mark the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare's birth.
