Dance of the new North

Dancer and choreographer Ronnarong Khampha presents Neo Lanna Matinee, at Lanna Traditional House Museum, Center for the Promotion of Arts and Culture, Chiang Mai University, on Saturday and Sunday at 4.30pm.

The production promises to imbue the afternoon with the pure, peaceful and free-spirited aura of Lanna. The non-profit project further explores new ways for Chiang Mai's older and younger artists to work together.

Neo Lanna Matinee will appeal to Thai, Asian and international audiences with the aim of making contemporary Lanna culture more widely known.

The term Neo Lanna denotes a genre embodying artistic changes that arose during the renaissance of Lanna arts and culture over the past few decades.

Artists working in the genre seek to create a new identity based on the roots of original Lanna culture while remaining within international and Thai contexts.

The dance performances created by Ronnarong combine Lanna and contemporary techniques in unique ways and all bearing his signature style.

With choreography by Ronnarong, Neo Lanna Matinee features the young dancers Peerasin Thanakonsit and Pasuta Fongrat along with three musicians, Torpong Samerjai, Witsaruth Tawinno and Suktham Nobang.

There is no admission fee. Reservations can be made via bit.ly/3yK0GjJ.
