Dance floor collapses during Genesis Owusu concert at Sydney's Enmore Theatre

Floor collapses mid-concert at Sydney's Enmore Theatre

A concert at the Enmore Theatre in Sydney's inner-west had to be abandoned last night after part of the dance floor collapsed in the middle of a sold-out performance by chart-topping singer Genesis Owusu.

Hundreds of people were dancing at the Newtown venue when the middle of the floor buckled under the weight.

No-one was injured and the concert was brought to an abrupt halt.

"The floor just caved in," audience member Joe Hardy tweeted.

People could be seen bouncing up and down as they walked across the carpet that stretched over a cavity that had opened up below.

One witness described it as being "like a cross between a water bed and a trampoline".

"No-one hurt, too much excitement, jumping, massive crack," another concert-goer wrote on social media.

Security guards moved people to the edges of the dance floor and placed wheelie bins and a barricade over the collapsed area.

The venue's managers then arrived to assess the damage.

ARIA-winning artist Owusu then broke the news to the audience that the show would have to be postponed.

"There's like a real big drop under that so this is actually really dangerous," he told the crowd.

"We're going to have reschedule the show, unfortunately."

This morning, Genesis Owusu told triple j he initially thought the crowd was separating to prepare to mosh.

"My perspective of the whole thing is we were doing the second song, everything's going well, I see people like in the middle of the crowd start to form a circle.

"Then the side of stage hits me in my ear-piece saying, 'Hold the show! Hold the show!' and I'm thinking there's like some technical difficulties, so I'm thinking he means hold the song while we figure this out.

"But he meant… there is a hole in the floor [and] immediately we had to pause the song."

After the show, he posted a message reading: "All silliness aside, everyone is safe and in good spirits.

"It was nice to feel for things to feel like it was getting back to normal for a second there.

"Round two sometime soon?"

A statement from the Enmore Theatre said the incident was caused by the "relentless rain" that has hit Sydney this week.

"Last night we made the decision to stop the Genesis Owusu show due to three piers at the point where the theatre inclines shifting underneath the carpet, creating an uneven floor," the statement read.

"The floor of the theatre has been assessed and remediation works have commenced.

"We have isolated the section that was affected by water and are further reinforcing the surrounding areas as a further precaution."

The historic Enmore Theatre had only recently reopened after being closed for two years due to COVID-19.

The art deco venue underwent a major restoration and refurbishment in 2020.

The theatre said tonight's concert by Brisbane artist Young Franco would go ahead.

Genesis Owusu continues his Australia tour, performing at the Adelaide Festival tonight.
