Dana White urged to reconsider Conor McGregor vs Jorge Masvidal after row

UFC president Dana White has been urged to reconsider his stance on a fight between Conor McGregor and Jorge Masvidal.

McGregor and Masvidal have teased a high-profile bout in the UFC for several years but a meeting has never materialised. Masvidal recently renewed his call-out to the Irishman, which prompted a fiery war of words between the pair on social media.

UFC legend Chael Sonnen believes the fight has not yet been offered to McGregor which is why it has not taken place. "I believe Conor would take the fight against Masvidal and I don't believe he has been offered the fight and I don't understand why," Sonnen said during an assessment of the fight on his YouTube channel.

"The way I see it, that is the mega-fight you want to just sail one in and guarantee you get a grand slam in business. Conor vs Jorge would be it.

"It ties back to [Dana White] saying, 'I would never make that fight because [Jorge Masvidal] is too big,' and [Conor McGregor] getting p***** in the car going up to 170 to show that he's not. I feel as though Conor's been on the hunt for Jorge Masvidal. That's what I feel and I feel as though Masvidal is very open to being hunted.

"That is an interesting match especially if the next step has been taken. What if Masvidal has convinced someone on the second floor of the UFC and they pursued this fight? That would be very interesting particularly if Conor is saying no and it may mean Conor is going in a different direction that hasn't been disclosed to us yet."

UFC president White previously suggested McGregor would be too small for Masvidal when he previously competed at 155lbs last year. “Hell no,” White said last year. “Masvidal is too big for Conor. There’s plenty of fights for [Masvidal] in his weight division without Conor. He’s too big for Conor. [McGregor] doesn’t belong at 170 [pounds]. He’s got the balls to fight at 170, but he doesn’t belong there.”

McGregor and Masvidal has traded verbal barbs this week with the Irishman accusing his rival of being a "pigeon brain ". Masvidal's agent Malik Kawa has previously claimed that fight offers have been turned down by McGregor on the back of White's assessment of the fight.

McGregor is planning to return to 170lbs after ballooning in weight and is targeting a route to a title shot in a similar way to Masvidal. But Masvidal has claimed the 33-year-old is still unlikely to accept an offer after his recent weight gain, despite the prospect of generating huge revenue.
