TV host Dan Walker has said that the helmet he was wearing "saved my life" after his bike was hit by a car. The 5News host shared images of himself with a bloodied and battered face, after he was taken to hospital following the incident on Monday morning.
He doesn't remember much about what happened but thanks the paramedics and medics who looked after him. Dan, who hosted BBC Breakfast for six years from 2016, was told by a police officer who attended the scene that the helmet he was wearing saved his life.
He wrote on Twitter: "The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so - if you’re on a bike - get one on your head. Smashed my watch & phone, ruined my trousers, my bike is a mess but I’m still here."
After some debate on his feed about how much protection helmets give, the news host added: "I understand this is a contentious issue and I don’t want an argument about it. I’m just happy mine worked today and the police officer at the scene called me this afternoon and said I would not be here now if I wasn’t wearing one"
The former Strictly Come Dancing contestant left BBC Breakfast in May, 2022, and became the host of 5News. Recently he interviewed the partner of missing Lancashire woman, Nicola Bulley.
After getting home from hospital late on Monday, he said: "Blown away by all the lovely messages. Thank you. Just got home from hospital. Battered and bruised but - amazingly - nothing broken. Very thankful to still be here. I have no memory of anything and just remember coming round on the tarmac with paramedics & police around me."
