Dan Walker shares health update after horror crash as beloved dog refuses to leave his side

Dan Walker has shared a health update after an accident earlier this week, and he has revealed that his beloved dog Winnie has refused to leave his side since the ordeal.

The broadcaster, 45, was rushed to hospital earlier this week and said he was "glad to be alive" after being hit by a car whilst out on his bike on Monday morning (February 20).

The Channel 5 newsreader shared photos on Twitter after the accident in Sheffield, which showed him sporting blood on his face and with an apparently swollen nose.

He has continued to share updates with his followers over recent days, including saying he's had difficulty sleeping.

He's shared another update this afternoon, alongside a photo of his cockapoo Winnie lying beside him. Dan wrote in the post: "[She] hasn't left my side this week. She's the best."

The presenter also shared two highlights from the day. He told his followers through the recent post that he had his "first solid food" and had "ordered a new cycling helmet".

Dan concluded by writing on the platform earlier: "Thank you for all the lovely messages and for asking how I'm doing. The swelling is going down but the body is still aching."

Dan had wrote in a tweet on Monday: "Bit of an accident this morning. Glad to be alive after getting hit by a car on my bike. Face is a mess but I don't think anything is broken."

The former BBC Breakfast host said that he was "thankful for our NHS " and later said that he was "blown away by all the lovely messages" he had received from his followers.

And he later tweeted on Monday afternoon: "Just got home from hospital. Battered and bruised but - amazingly - nothing broken. Very thankful to still be here."

He later issued some advice to his followers, telling them in a subsequent tweet: "The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so - if you're on a bike - get one on your head."

Dan further commented in a tweet: "Smashed my watch and phone, ruined my trousers, my bike is a mess but I'm still here." He added: "Currently eating soup through a straw".

Among the photos he recently shared after the accident had been one of Winnie. He'd wrote about his beloved dog: "Being looked after by this gorgeous, tired nurse".

As reported this morning, a spokesperson for South Yorkshire Police said: "No arrests have been made and enquiries are ongoing."
