Dan Walker was quickly flooded with the same message of advice as he got back on his bike for the first time since being in a serious crash last month. The former BBC Breakfast presenter revealed on February 20 that he had been knocked off his bike by a car by sharing a series of images of his bloodied and bruised face on social media.
Later, sharing an image of himself with bruises and giving a thumbs up, the 46-year-old added that he had no memory of being hit by a car. Dan told his Instagram followers: “Just got home from hospital. Battered and bruised but – amazingly – nothing broken. Very thankful to still be here. I have no memory of anything and just remember coming round on the tarmac with paramedics & police around me."
Dan then continued to share updates on his recovery, which saw him having to eat and drink through a straw, as friends and strangers rallied around to offer their help and support. But the Channel 5 News presenter has since returned to work and he has now also got back on two wheels.
Dan, who left the BBC to join 5 News on Channel 5 last year, shared an image of himself riding his bike in London on Monday (March 20) and wrote: "Got back on the bike for first time today and felt safe and secure. New bike, new helmet… just disappointed I didn’t manage to match the socks to the frame.2
And while fans were happy to see he was getting back into cycling, others were quick to offer him the same instruction. @kate24p said: "Errr - Dan - where is your hi-viz??? Be safe, be seen.." @sara.swims4billy commented: "Great stuff But Where is your hi vis ? Essential for safety helps everyone see you."
@suezangel replied: "Not being funny get a high viz vest...it helps...people will see you better...I nearly got knocked off twice b4 I got one..." @winston_wolfe_official posted: "I recommend a hi vis jacket." @burtenshawcarol added: "Well done Dan, please take care and wear Hi-Viz."
Dan, who lives in Sheffield, previously said wearing a helmet saved his life. He said in a tweet at the time: "The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so – if you’re on a bike – get one on your head. Smashed my watch & phone, ruined my trousers, my bike is a mess but I’m still here."
And while there was an outpouring of support from fans, others appeared to claim that wearing head protection wasn’t necessary. The former Football Focus host then responded in a tweet, writing: "It’s odd to get lectured by people telling me that bike helmets aren’t important..."
He continued: "The emergency services at the scene yesterday told me I probably wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t wearing one. Funny old world! I hope you’re having a good Tuesday. Soup through a straw for lunch."
