Dan Walker has offered an update after he was left bloodied and bruised in a cycling accident. The former BBC Breakfast host took to social media on Monday (February 20) where he revealed that he had been knocked off his bike as he shared a picture of himself with ambulance crews.
Later, sharing an image of himself with bruises and giving a thumbs up, the 45-year-old added that he had no memory of being hit by a car. Dan told his Instagram followers: “Just got home from hospital. Battered and bruised but – amazingly – nothing broken. Very thankful to still be here. I have no memory of anything and just remember coming round on the tarmac with paramedics & police around me."
He also thanked the police, NHS and ambulance services for helping him and said none of his bones were broken as he shared pictures of his injured face and hands, his dog and the nurse who treated him in the hospital.
Dan, who lives in Sheffield, added: “The helmet I was wearing saved my life today so – if you’re on a bike – get one on your head. Smashed my watch & phone, ruined my trousers, my bike is a mess but I’m still here. Currently eating soup through a straw and being looked after by a gorgeous, furry, tired nurse at the end of the sofa."
The Channel 5 News presenter has since been sharing updates of his ongoing recovery as friends and strangers rallied around to offer their help and support. On Wednesday, he shared a picture of himself, albeit with his head missing, alongside two men from a local restaurant who headed to his house with food.
"The good people of Sheffield have been so kind this week," Dan penned. "Thanks to Sobuj (left) and Eiffran from @prithiraj_restaurant who have just popped round with a ‘Get Well Soon’ curry. The kids are delirious! I’ll be sucking the sauce off a poppadom."
His last comment comes after he was left eating and drinking through a straw and unable to use his hand properly. However, in the latest post, the former Strictly Come Dancing star revealed his sweet dog Winnie 'hasn’t left [his] side all week' as he posted a picture of the doting pooch resting on his grazed hands.
He went on to add: "She’s the best," before sharing: "2 things happened today… 1. I had my first solid food since Monday. 2. I ordered a new cycling helmet. Thank you for all the lovely messages & for asking how I’m doing. The swelling is going down but the body is still aching."
It comes after Dan was forced to respond when he shared how wearing his cycling helmet saved his life. He later tweeted: "It's odd to get lectured by people telling me that bike helmets aren’t important... The emergency services at the scene yesterday told me I probably wouldn’t be here if I wasn’t wearing one. Funny old world! I hope you’re having a good Tuesday. Soup through a straw for lunch."
